This Haffner Project started on the 18th November 2011. It started as an experiment to improve the bass response with mr Usher Be718 two-way speakers and a Velodyne DD18 subwoofer. The problem was that there was poor integration between these two speakers even though I was using a DEQX for the crossover. What was missing was bass articulation and slam.
The answer was however sitting in the same room with my old Audiosound Haffner 8077 Studio Monitor three-way speaker. Whilst they were good in their day, they were now about thirty years old and had under gone several modifications by their designer, Ron Cooper of Audiosound Laboratories in North Curl Curl, NSW.
The solution seemed simple, do the three-way active system using the Usher BE718, the Haffner for the bass and the Velodyne DD18 for the subwoofer. What could be simpler? The answer to that dawned on me over the next two years.
